Celebrating National Hemp Month: Exploring the Versatility and Benefits of Hemp

In 2019, activists and hemp enthusiasts celebrated the first-ever National Hemp Day, hoping to promote the uses and benefits of hemp and remove the stigma surrounding it. Inspired by this success, CBDMD submitted the paperwork to designate July as National Hemp Month, dedicated to raising awareness through education and community involvement. Since then, millions of people across the United States have enthusiastically celebrated National Hemp Month every July.

Understanding Hemp: A Versatile and Valuable Plant

Hemp, also known as industrial hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant that is specifically cultivated for industrial use. It is recognized by the U.S. federal government as a variety of Cannabis sativa with no more than 0.3% THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis) by dry weight. Hemp plants can be utilized for their fiber, seeds, roots, and buds to produce a wide range of products.

Legality of Hemp

Industrial hemp was made legal in the U.S. with the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill. This legalization has led to the growth of multi-billion-dollar industries in hemp cultivation, extraction, processing, and manufacturing. The market for cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in high concentrations in many varieties of industrial hemp, has played a significant role in driving this industry forward. The legalization of hemp has also paved the way for nationwide sales of CBD products.

The Many Benefits of Hemp

Hemp is an incredibly versatile plant that offers numerous environmental, nutritional, and therapeutic benefits.

Environmental Benefits of Hemp

The environmental benefits of hemp are remarkable. It is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and has one of the strongest and most durable fibers, making it an ideal material for clothing. Hemp can also serve as a sustainable alternative to wood in various manufacturing processes, reducing the need for deforestation. Additionally, hemp has phytoremediation properties, meaning it can remove toxins and impurities from soil at an impressive rate. Its ability to decontaminate soil has been utilized in places like Chernobyl, where it helps in the remediation efforts.

By embracing hemp and utilizing it in place of plastic and wood, we can significantly reduce the harm caused to the environment by these conventional materials and promote a healthier planet.

Nutritional Benefits of Hemp

Hemp seeds are highly nutritious and can be incorporated into a wide range of recipes. They are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health, brain function, reducing inflammation, and supporting metabolism. Additionally, hemp seeds contain all essential amino acids and are considered a “complete” protein, making them a valuable source of protein for those following a plant-based diet. Hemp oil, derived from the seeds, has also been linked to a reduction in the severity of PMS symptoms.

Therapeutic Benefits of Hemp

Hemp contains various compounds, including CBD, cannabinoids, and terpenes, which offer potential therapeutic properties. While specific claims cannot be made about hemp itself, research suggests that compounds derived from hemp may have analgesic, anti-anxiety, antibacterial, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, among others.

Fascinating Facts About Hemp

Hemp has a rich history and has been utilized for various purposes throughout time. Here are a few intriguing facts:

  • Hemp was extensively used as the primary source of rope, including in sail rigging and anchor cords, dating back to prehistoric times.
  • In 1938, Popular Mechanics magazine predicted that hemp could become the next billion-dollar crop. The article highlighted how hemp could displace imported raw materials and manufactured products, providing job opportunities for American workers.
  • During World War II, the U.S. federal government produced a short film promoting hemp cultivation to support the war efforts. This film was thought to be lost but was later discovered by cannabis activist Jack Herer and made public.
