Starting this Saturday, July 1st, adults who are 21 years old or older can legally cultivate their own cannabis at home in Connecticut.
According to the new law, adults can individually grow up to six marijuana plants, with a maximum of three plants being mature. If there is more than one adult in a household, a maximum of 12 plants can be grown. The plants must be cultivated indoors in a locked and secure area.
In 2021, state lawmakers passed legislation to legalize the adult-use cannabis market in Connecticut. The initial provisions of the law, which allowed for the personal possession of cannabis, went into effect in July of that year. In the same year, penalties for home cultivation of marijuana were reduced to civil fines.
Additional provisions were implemented in October 2021, allowing qualified patients to cultivate marijuana at home. Retail sales of cannabis products to adults began earlier this year.
As highlighted in the NORML document, “Core Attributes of Adult Use Access Regulations,” NORML supports individuals’ right to grow their own cannabis instead of solely relying on licensed retail producers. NORML believes that legislative provisions protecting non-commercial home cultivation of cannabis ensure that the cannabis available in retail outlets is of high quality, safe, and affordable.
